Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. It impacts tens of millions of seniors in America each year with a new case reported every 66 seconds. While almost unheard of 30 years ago, it is now among the top 10 causes of death in the United States and is the only ailment on that list that cannot be prevented, cured, or slowed.
Common signs and symptoms include frequent memory lapses, trouble with multiple-step tasks, misplacing common items, poor judgment, and forgetting common words. Since Alzheimer's disease is progressive, it normally starts out with relatively mild symptoms, but by the final stages, a senior will require full-time, round-the-clock Alzheimer's care.
It is important to remember that the senior brain is still very powerful, and researchers have much to discover. There may not be cures and treatments that work for everyone, but there are therapies that may help slow the progression of the stages in some individuals and there are many aspects of Alzheimer's care designed to improve a senior's quality of life.
Many components of Alzheimer's care are focused on an individual's physical comfort while others address the brain. Creating predictable routines, keeping the brain active through exercise and experiential activities, and avoiding situations that create undue stress are all important parts to maximizing senior’s quality of life and independence.
While Alzheimer's disease is still deadly, we know more about it today than we did 30 years ago. Today, Alzheimer's care is available to help seniors age in place while maintaining their freedom, dignity, and self-respect.
