Spotting A Stroke With Care At Home In Marietta, OH

May 10, 2018 by David Yeomans

Care at home can help to identify signs and symptoms of a stroke in Marietta, OH

Comfort Keepers provides care for seniors who need help with daily living activities or personal care. They also provide specialized services for seniors with advanced, progressive, or other serious conditions like Alzheimer's disease, ALS, cancers, and strokes.

In the United States, a stroke occurs every 40 seconds. Every 4 minutes a stroke is fatal. Those that are not deadly often leave the individual with a long-term disability. These seniors required varying degrees of care at home in order to maintain their freedom and independence.

Not all strokes are fatal or leave a senior with a serious or long-term disability. There are many factors that determine the severity of a stroke and/or the amount of time it takes to recover, including a senior's overall fitness, other medical conditions, and the area of the brain that was impacted. Among the most important factors is the time it takes from the start of the stroke until the senior receives emergency medical assistance. Therefore, it is important for seniors and their loved ones to know the signs and symptoms of a stroke.

The most common signs of a stroke include paralysis or numbness on one side of the body (normally in the arm, leg, or face), difficulty speaking including the slurring of speech, a sudden severe headache, and trouble with balance or walking.

Medical and care at home professionals use a simple but powerful acronym to determine if a senior may be having a stroke: FAST.

Face: see if the senior can smile and if part of their face droops

Arms: ask the senior to lift both arms above their head; if they can, does one arm drift down?

Speech: have the senior respond to a simple question and see if their speech is slurred or strange?

Time: if the answer to any of the questions or actions causes concern, it is time to call 911.
