During April it is Oral Cancer Awareness month in the United States. During this time, Comfort Keepers home care for elderly family and friends encourages all seniors and their loved ones to learn about oral cancer, common dental problems, and risk factors. Seniors who struggle with daily living activities, including oral hygiene may find the support and assistance they need through home care.
The most common dental problems faced by seniors include:
Darkened teeth Lost teeth Losing the sense of taste Dry mouth
Root decay Gum disease Uneven jawbones Oral cancer
Of these problems, oral cancer is the most severe. Left untreated, it can be fatal. Oral cancer can affect any area of the mouth, throat, or sinuses, including the lips, tongue, cheeks, palate, and throat. The most common signs of oral cancer are difficulty swallowing, swelling of the mouth or throat, lumps and bumps in the mouth, pain, and discomfort in the mouth, and white or red patches in the mouth.
If a senior loved one has any of the signs or symptoms associated with oral cancer, a dental appointment should be scheduled. If senior have difficulty making or getting to and from appointments, Comfort Keepers home care for elderly loved ones can help. In addition to homemaking and personal care services, caregivers also provide local transportation support and will help seniors make appointments, order prescriptions, run errands, and so forth.
With regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups, a senior can decrease their risk of dental problems including oral cancer. Eliminating tobacco and limiting alcohol consumption are also critical factors in lowering the risk of oral cancer.
