Interactive Caregiving™ in the Mid Ohio Valley

Providing our unique approach to Parkersburg, WV and Marietta, OH

Our distinctive approach to in-home care is at the very heart of Comfort Keepers®.

Our dedicated caregivers, the special people we call Comfort Keepers®, transform day-to-day caregiving into opportunities for meaningful conversation and activities that engage and enrich the lives of seniors physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally.

How Does It Make a Difference?

We believe Interactive Caregiving contributes to longer, healthier, more purposeful lives for seniors; in fact, many research studies point to the health benefits of active living in later life.

An Interactive Caregiving plan is created for each senior client based on his or her personality, unique interests, health, and abilities. This plan will include a variety of activities such as

  • walks in the neighborhood.
  • working together on household chores.
  • preparing a meal.
  • discussing current events or personal interests.
  • reminiscing while viewing photo albums.
  • working on hobbies, puzzles or crafts.
  • going shopping or to church.
  • visiting a local senior center.
  • participating in civic group activities.
  • dancing to music.

Each Comfort Keepers® office delivers essential personal care, companionship, and homemaker services that help seniors live happily at home, like other in-home care providers. However, with our Interactive Caregiving approach, we are able to raise seniors’ quality of life to a much higher level than typical in-home care providers.

The result? A healthier, safer, more fulfilling life for your loved one in the comfort of his or her home.

Benefits of Interactive Caregiving

Professional in-home care can be an effective way to enable seniors to remain in their homes while receiving the help they need to be safe and healthy. An essential element of effective in-home care is Interactive CaregivingTM that provides for emotional well-being that is vital to increasing quality of life. Seniors can benefit in many ways from comprehensive care that incudes Interactive CaregivingTM intended to meet physical, emotional, and social needs.

Interactive care provides therapeutic benefits through active engagement in tasks.  Therefore, rather than simply preparing a meal and setting it before the person receiving care, the Comfort Keeper will invite them to work in the kitchen side by side while enjoying conversation. If the client is not able to actively participate, they are involved through conversation about their preferences and/or family memories involving food preparation and mealtime.  Each senior is encouraged to participate in household tasks as is appropriate for their capabilities. Not only does this fosters the building of a relationship, more importantly it allows the care receiver to retain vital skills.  The old saying of ‘Use it or lose it’ applies to many physical abilities like fine motor skills and balance as well as to social and cognitive skills.  Comfort Keepers began providing around the clock care for a dementia patient that had not engaged in conversation with his adult children who were next door neighbors for 6 months.  After two weeks, he surprised his children by jumping into their conversation.  The family was curious about what we had done.  The answer was simply that our staff had used Interactive Caregiving techniques.

Besides sharing in household chores and personal care, interactive caregiving includes activities that any companion would typically enjoy with a friend. Seniors are encouraged to share hobbies, conversation, and activities that they love with their caregivers to increase their emotional well-being and mental state of mind.

Comfort Keepers will even take companionship services beyond the home, escorting the senior in their care to appointments and events. The senior receives reliable transportation and mobility services as needed, but they also enjoy having a friend at their side as they run errands or attend family functions. Leaving the home is safer and more enjoyable with a skilled companion at their side.

Interactive CaregivingTM has few limits. Caregivers may begin reveling with their senior over old pictures, which could lead to listening to old music that is full of memories. Before you know it, they may even be sharing a dance in the living room like our beloved client, Ruth does when a good song comes on the radio while her Comfort Keeper is cleaning.

For care that has potential to truly optimize the quality of your loved one’s life, choose Interactive CaregivingTM that considers every aspect of senior life and well-being.
